When something goes wrong with your health you may have 3 different treatment options.

Prescription drugs may be an option. If they are likely to make your complaint go away and not have any side effects then clearly they are a good option. But I'd suggest that before you take any prescription drugs you check on your favourite search engine to find out what the potential side effects are so that you can make an informed decision. Your doctor likely doesn't have enough time to explain this to you if he has 10 or 20 minutes set as your appointment time in which to figure out what is wrong with you and give you a prescription. He'll probably mutter something like 'Come and see me if you have any problems' without going into detail about what those problems could be.

So type in the name of the prescribed drug and 'side effects' into the search box of your favourite seach engine.
You might get something like:
'Side effects may include:
Abdominal pain, allergic reaction, back pain, changes in eyesight, cold, constipation, diarrhea, dry eyes, dry skin, flu symptoms, gas, hair loss, headache, heartburn, indigestion, inflammation of sinus and nasal passages, itching, joint pain, leg cramps, muscle aching or weakness, purple or red spots on the skin, rash, sore throat, urinary problems, vomiting, weakness'

Now do you feel so confident about that particular drug?

I have a wholesale customer from Australia who is visiting in the States right now. I gave him some of my magnetic dots.
After I gave them to him, he tore his Achilles Tendon. This is what he has to say:

Well, it's great that she got rid of her headaches using a magnetic bracelet, but I really cannot think of any reason why that would work! Using magnetic eye masks, now that I can see why it would work. If there is swelling in the tissue surrounding the brain then decreasing the swelling with bio-north magnets would almost certainly make the headache go away. But for a couple of small magnets near the wrist to do that. Well, I don't understand it!

I realize that it will have a small effect on the blood circulating through the wrist and then moving on to other parts of the body. It's interesting. Really more double blind studies need to be done!

These are great - they are so multi purpose.

A lot of people use them for anklets.

They make fine magnetic bracelets. The advantage to them is that they will fit any size of wrist. (You can even put one around your neck if you like! But they weren't designed for that!)

Quite a few people put them around the necks of their pets. Animals also do very well with magnetic products.

These are also called Neo magnets, Rare Earth Magnets, Neodymium Iron Boron magnets or NdFeB magnets.

They are very strong for their size so they are ideal for magnetic therapy. Stronger magnetic dots (or bandages) are also made from this material.

They last very well - they should last you a lifetime if you look after them.

Don't get them too hot - heat will demagnetize magnets made of this material. And don't drop them if you can help it. The shock could demagnetize and/or break them.

Their disadvantage is that they rust very easily - and who wants rust all over them. So for magnetic therapy they are coated. The better ones are coated in 24 carat gold and the cheaper ones are coated in paint or maybe copper - which can also stain one's skin but is likely good for you when it does so.

Whateverer they are coated with, it won't make any difference to how strong they are as magnets. The strength of the magnet is a function of the material it is made from and it's size.

2 Neo magnets the same size are the same strength.

The reason why some suppliers will say their magnets are 3750 gauss and other suppliers will say that their magnets are 2500 gauss is because the first supplier is talking about how strong the magnet is inside at it's centrepoint, and the second supplier is talking about how strong it is at it's surface. One could wish that there was a standard here!

Copper has long been a folk medicine aid for people with arthritis. My mother had bad arthritis in her hands and wore copper bangles. She was sure that they helped.

At that time it was thought that nothing that was on your skin got inside you. So of course the medical profession at the time scoffed at the idea of a copper bangle doing any good at all.

Now we know that the skin does indeed absorb many things that are on it into the body.

Copper is an essential mineral for people. We only need a very small amount of it, but we do need that small amount. Copper is part of the antioxidant enzyme, Superoxide Dismutase. Antioxidants are certainly going to help people with arthritis.

Copper is needed for Adenosine Triphosphate - which gives us our energy.

Collagen and some hormones need copper. Collagen is part of muscles and skin.

Most people get enough copper in their diet, but a few don't. If you somehow have a lot of zinc in your diet you may become deficient in copper. Zinc interfere's with copper's uptake.

So there may well be some truth in the folk medicine idea of wearing a copper bangle for arthritis - there often is truth in folk remedies. Most modern medicine has been developed from the effective parts of plants etc that were used for folk remedies.

But there is a downside to wearing copper jewelry for some people. If your skin is naturally acidic quite a lot of the copper will be transferred from the bangle to your skin. Sometimes enough to give your skin a green hue.
This isn't dangerous. It can easily be rinsed off. But it is something to think about before deciding to wear your copper magnetic bracelet with a white sleeved shirt. Maybe a gold or silver plated bracelet would be better fo those occasions.

Once again, I feel dubious. That particular belt had 3 magnets in it and I don't think that they would necessarily align with any acupuncture points - the belt wrapped around the waist several times by the look of it.

But once again, I certainly know quite a few Chinese people who believe that wearing magnets around their waist keeps them slim. They are slim, but they are also active and don't seem to overeat that often.

I've tried to find that study by the scientists at the University of Toronto. I was curious about how you could have 'placebo' magnetic earrings. Basically you can take two fairly strong magnets, put one each side of your ear lobe and they will stay in place. My 2500 gauss magnetic dots do that beautifully. I wanted to sell magnetic earrings, but the samples I've received so far don't always stay on very well. My magnetic dots do stay on well and they look good so I use those myself.

But placebo magnetic earrings? hmmmmmm! Show me and then I'll believe in them!

I see that the university test had exercise and diet components as well. Well, those would help one lose weight for sure.

I wish I could find out more about acupuncture. Is this wearing magnetic earrings for weight loss a con or is it for real?

This one has me stumped. But a lot of my customers of Chinese heritage do indeed believe this to be so.

They wear magnetic waist belts and they also put a magnet (with a bracelet or a magnetic dot) on the middle of the inside of each wrist about 3cms or 1 1/4 inches away from where the hand starts.

I didn't believe that it could work, but then I thought about how I felt about acupuncture many years ago, and acupuncture does work. The inside of the wrist is an acupunture point and magnets can be used to stimulate acupunture points.

Well, I got to thinking about it and decided to try it. Now I have a dot magnet taped to the inside of each wrist. If it doesn't work, well I've only lost a few bandaids. And if it does work, well I'll be very happy! Sitting at a computer for many hours a day is not good for the waistline!

That said, I suspect that I have to get away from the computer and walk, run, jog, swim, whatever to lose those extra few pounds!

For some reason this is a side of using magnetic jewelry that hasn't appeared to have any proper studies done on it. Amazing, considering that the baby boomers are now all approaching 60.

Cleopatra is said to have worn a magnetic loadstone on her forehead to preseve her looks, so there is definately nothing new in the idea that magnets help to keep wrinkles etc at bay.

Studies with electomagnetic pulsers have found that they help the skin to produce more collagen and so help to preserve a youthful complection. So it is quite likely that magnetic jewelry will have the same effect on skin that the magnets are close too. That's the best we can do until someone decides to do some extensive study into the subject. I know I'm going to use magnets myself!

When it is being shaped into beads and polished it loses it's magnetism, so once the beads are finished they are re-magnetized.

What is different about the magnetism from a hematite necklace or bracelet?
The beads turn around, so you will be getting a north pole magnetic field from some of them and a south pole magnetic field from others. And as you move around during the day the beads will move around too so the magnetic polarity will be constantly changing, but most likely you will always get a mix of north and south pole magnetic fields.

North pole magnetic fields are good at healing.
South pole magnetic fields make you feel more awake and alert.

Most metal magnetic jewelry will only have bio-north facing your body. This is because if you have a swollen and painful area the bio-north magnetic field is very likely to help you to heal faster and to reduce pain. Probably by helping the antioxidants attach themselve to free radicals so much faster and neutralizing them.

So when you chose a piece of magnetic jewelry, keep this in mind. If you want it to help remove pain or swelling you're probably far better off with a metal bracelet.

That said, the hematite will help with pain and swelling too, and sometimes it's the looks that are important. Better to wear something that doesn't act as fast than to wear nothing to help!

New Styles

I got some samples of some new styles of magnetic bracelet today. I think that I will be adding 3 of them to my line. There is a brushed silver men's link bracelet that is pretty plain. I like it a lot - more than any of the other men's styles I carry. And there is a plain silver women's link bracelet which is similar to the 'hugs and kisses style', but not quite.

Also there is a hematite magnetic anklet/bracelet which is black hematite with a purple stone every inch or so. Really nice.

They are good quality with strong magnets and they look good, just what I wanted. I wish it wouldn't always take so long to add new products. So far I've found it takes about 4 months, after the factory says that they can do it in 30 days!

The other 9 samples I got aren't good enough in looks.

Magnetic Anklets

Magnetic Anklets were the first magnetic jewelry that I wore with any consistancy.

I used to work at trade shows for several weeks of the year.

Trade show venues always seem to have solid concrete floors. After a 12 hour day standing and walking on a concrete floor, My feet, calves and ankles were extremely painful. And as the show moved into the second, third fourth and fith days the pain got worse.

One day someone suggested I try some magnetic anklets. I was ready to try anything! I didn't really think they would work, but on the other hand I didn't think they would do me any harm.

Where the Magnets should be with a Magnetic Bracelet

When you are buying a magnetic bracelet, as well as how the bracelet's style fits in with your wardrobe, make sure that the magnets will be in the right position for you.

There are two pulse points close together on the inside of your wrist. If you hold a thumb or finger firmly on them, you will be able to feel your pulse.

Those two spots are exactly where you want the magnets' bio-morth poles to be.
They shouldn't be tight against the skin - you want to keep the blood circulating without any hindrance!

But the closer they are to the pulse spots the better. The magnetic field from a small magnet in a magnetic bracelet does not penetrate very deeply. A magnet on the other side of your wrist will probably do no good at all unless you have a swollen wrist, in which case it will help ease the swelling.

If the blood going through your wrist comes under the magnetic field of the bracelet, that's when the power of the magnet can help your body to heal itself.
So make sure that you get the right size of bracelet for you! Otherwise you may just have a nice piece of jewelry.

I was talking to someone today who had injured her shoulders doing yoga. She figured from a newer teacher that she hadn't been using her shoulders properly going into upward dog - she'd been hunching them forward and ended up with a very painful pair of shoulders.

Because not many double-blind studies have yet been done on magnetic therapy using static magnets, for now we have to rely on the overwhelming number of personal stories of people who have used magnets and found that they had less pain afterwards.

Sometimes it was just a small annoying pain that went away and sometimes a life-changing experience where a pain that was preventing them from living a normal life just dissapeared.

Of course, this can't be considered scientific proof, but until the proper scientific studies have been done, the sheer quantity of people who feel that wearing a magnetic bracelet for just a few days has helped their quality of life is overwhelming.

We can't guarantee that wearing a magnetic bracelet will help you. But at least there are no known harmful side effects. For a few dollars, you can try it out for yourself and tell your friends about your experience using magnetic jewelry. Did the pain go away? Gauss - What is it?

Magnetic flux density is the strength of the magnetic field a magnet produces. Will it pick up a paperclip or will it pick up a car.

The most widely used unit of magnetic flux density is the tesla (T) ;
A gauss is 1/10,000th of a tesla.

A fridge magnet probably has a magnetic field of 10 to 15 gauss.

The internal strength of the magnet may be far more gauss than that, but the surface gauss is what is useful to you in a practical sense. When someone states that a magnetis is so many gauss it might be useful to ask if that is the surface gauss or the internal gauss that they are measuring. If it's the internal gauss, then you need to know what the external gauss is.

If you have two magnets with a surface gauss of 3000 and they are stuck together, they may be quite hard to pull apart.

Magnetic therapy jewelry usually uses magnets from five hundred to two thousand gauss at their surface. Stronger magnets can penetrate deeper. Usually you are trying to get the magnetic field to penetrate your blood at a pulse point.

Magnetic bracelets are the most common magnetic therapy jewelry used. A magnetic bangle will usually have a magnet on each end, and these should be close to the two pulse points on your wrist. Here the magnetic field can affect what is happening in the blood flowing by under those pulse points.

I sell both link bracelets with 6 magnets in them and bangles with two magnets in them. My personal opinion is that the bangles are more effective - the magnets are positioned just where they need to be positioned. Magnets on the top of your wrist are likely doing nothing for you! That said, looks are important when we are wearing jewelry, so if a link bracelet style suits you better, go for it. Even if the magnets aren't in the optimum place for you, the two nearest the pulse points should definately help.

Comments on the Baylor study

Of couse, this was a pilot study - a study to see if it would be worthwhile to do further studies. A 75% positive result is very good indeed! I've seen drugs with far smaller, sometimes almost no positive results, get lauded in the newspapers and hailed as the next great cure for whatever. When I've read those studies I've wondered why the newspapers were so impressed! Say 3% positive results with several bad side effects for some drug treatment leaves me wondering.

This study was done in 1997.

Now, is it or isn't it important to help people get relief from pain such as the pain that those polio patients had?
I would say resoundingly that yes, it's very important. Helping others to have a higher quality of life is something that I would consider a very good human quality. Especially if it can be done without any bad side effects.

So now, here we have a pilot study with the most encouraging results and no follow up in 9 years! What's with that?
I think that it is a major problem in the north American health care system - Most studies are funded by the drug companies . The drug companies are businesses. They are there to make money. They are really only likely to fund studies on drugs that they are developing.
There should be a point at which the governments step in and fund studies for the general good. Of course they do at times, but not often enough in my opinion.

So this study leaves some questions.
* 300 to 500 gauss is considered very low. Myself I always use 1000 to 2500 gauss. Would the results have been better with a stronger magnet? Or would they have been the same or worse?
* 45 minutes is not a long time! Not for someone who has been in chronic pain for years. Would a longer exposure have more beneficial results?
*Did they use the bio-north pole towards the skin at all times? Or a mixture of north and south poles towards the skin?

I hope that at some time there are more reputable double blind studies done on this with different types of magnets. Especially I'd like to see it done with a little rare earth magnetic dot of about 2500 gauss against the original 300 - 500 gauss, and with attention being paid to which pole of the magnet faced the patient.

76% of participants receive Pain Relief from using Magnetic Therapy

Researchers at the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston report on a double-Blind Pilot Study to determine what effect, if any, magnetic therapy had on reliving pain in patients suffering from postpolio syndrome. (published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)

Postpoilo syndrome typically produces widespread persistent pain. The only therapies that are presently reccomended are relaxation, diathermy or electrotherapy, braces and crutches, or prescription medications. These don't offer much in the way of pain management, and that was why this research was undertaken.

Fifty patients suffering from postpolio syndrome who also had muscular pain or neuralgic pain of the joints were invited to participate in the study. Half of the participants were placed in the control group and the other half was placed in the test group.
Each participant filled out a McGill Pain Questionnaire that contains different adjectives that relate to the nature and severity of the pain they experienced.

Each participant was treated with either a sham magnet (placebo) or a real permanent magnet with a flux density of 300 to 500 Gauss for 45 minutes. Then the participants were asked to re-evaluate the degree of pain felt. The degree of pain felt before the therapy was almost equal for both groups.

76% of the participants who received the real magnet had less pain, but only 19% of those who received the placebo had less pain.

The study showed that treatment with a permanent magnet of 300 to 500 Gauss that was positioned at the precise areas of the body at which manual contact or applied force was painful, resulted in a considerable and rapid reduction in pain with no observable bad side effects, in people suffering from Postpolio Syndrome.

Despite the results, the researchers were unable to account for the magnet’s amazing success in reducing pain. They felt that it may possibly be because of an alteration in the way pain is received and acknowledged or because of the release of endogenous opioids in the brain.
